During my studies at university, I went through a lot of papers and lectures about the organizational model of the flat organization.
Now, working at RB, I can experience it myself on a daily basis.
An organization is considered “flat” when there are not too many hierarchy levels – decisions are made quickly, bureaucracy is not too high and teams are composed of people at all levels in the organization. As a consequence, people and their work are visible from the very beginning.
But is this an opportunity or a threat? That’s the question!
.
Being under the spotlight from day 1, gives you a lot of responsibility, and at the same time gives you the chance to receive feedback from top management on your work. That’s how it works at RB: Entrepreneurship and Ownership are required skills to succeed.
This is what happens to interns too: from the very beginning, they are asked to present their work to their function (director included). I believe a flat organization gives you the freedom to carry your own projects and adds value to personal achievement. If you are able to take advantage from that, you can really shape your career in terms of role, contents and speed of progression.
Due to international projects, the visibility of your work can reach top management from other countries, allowing you to build your personal network not just at a local level.
This kind of exposure can be seen as a threat or a big risk. How do you see it?
