The RB R&D 'Year in Industry' placement scheme - what's it really like?

A few weeks back Allan gave an insight from a summer placement student he worked with in Supply at the RB Nottingham site.
I thought I would follow suit and asked our current R&D Aircare student, Mandi, to give you an insight into what it is like to work for RB as an R&D ‘Year in Industry’ placement.

Generally we look for high achieving students who have completed their first two years in a relevant degree specialism and have a keen interested into working in a FMCG R&D role following university.
Mandi is the perfect example of this and as you will read below, she is thoroughly enjoying developing valuable experience through her time with RB.
If you are currently at university and considering a completing an industrial placement this may provide a very useful insight to the experience you could gain:

Verity – R&D

R&D Associate

Name: Verity
Nationality: British
Where I work for RB: UK – Research and Development
Education: I graduated from Leeds University with BSc Genetics in 2008 and MSc Biosciences in 2009. Throughout university I aimed to further develop not only my scientific but also my professional experience. This meant as well as spending long hours in the laboratory during the day, I worked part time as a member of the University Union nightclub management team.

Career: I started working at RB literally the week after I finished my Masters! I decided to go into industry rather than academia as I thrive on challenges and the RB graduate scheme offered the perfect opportunity to develop myself in a fast paced and dynamic environment. I started my first RB graduate placement a few months ago, and I am currently working in Category R&D developing new Airwick products aiming to outperform and deliver the best home fragrance experience possible. The role is exciting and challenging, and I have had hands on project management experience right from day one, there’s no time for warming up at RB, you get straight into the action right from the start and that’s one of the things I enjoy the most about the company!

Although I have full ownership of my project, giving me the opportunity to display my personal entrepreneurship, there’s a great team spirit between my colleagues and everyone understands that we are all part of the RB community. Everyone understands that the success of one project is an achievement for everyone, so there are always people around to help develop ideas and experiment with solutions. This positive and vibrant attitude is infectious throughout the company, and is one of the aspects that makes coming into work every day exciting and enjoyable.

Although I have only been with RB a few months, I have already gained a phenomenal amount of knowledge! The dynamic nature of RB means that I have been exposed to a wide array of invaluable commercial and technical experiences which will provide me with a solid basis for the rest of my career. When I complete my role in Air Care I will go on to perform two further roles as part of the graduate scheme, hopefully involving an international move, and I’ve no doubt that these roles will provide me with further enjoyable, challenging and rewarding experiences.
