Reckitt Benckiser, RB, the company that makes Vanish, Airwick, Finish, Veet and many leading brands… whatever you’d like to call us, we’re one of the world’s fastest-growing companies in household, health and personal care products. We want to give you a window into our world and see what ‘opportunity’ means to us. We’re one of those places where no two days are the same, where you’re expected to put your money where your mouth is, challenge the status quo, and do it fast. Whatever ‘it’ is. Our bloggers will be sharing with you their thoughts and experiences to give you a real understanding of the breadth of global opportunity here and the diversity of RB, Many will be people who are on graduate or management trainee programmes and some will be well established in their careers here.

Apparently, a lot of graduates are fascinated by RBs corporate brand identity, the pink kite.
Last week I attended Bocconi&Jobs with my colleagues from Talent Development: this is one of the most important career fairs in Italy, taking place at Bocconi University twice a year.
Companies have the chance to make presentations, display current opportunities and vacancies, meet students and candidates and obviously interview them.

.

.

Actually, I am impressed by the number of people that approached RB’s stand and company presentation: compared to the last career fair in 2009, people seem to link company brand with our products, and thanks to university outreach activities, they are all attracted by the culture and values represented by the pink kite.

.

“RB language, approach and modus operandi came across as something different from the majority of big corporations: you guys are young, informal, fast, demanding and you go straight to the point!”.
I’m happy to notice that all the efforts we’ve been put in our job to communicate are effectively seeding in the mind of a number of young talented students. And most of all, the funny thing is that we do this just working in the way we are used to during our office hours…!

.

For me it’s way easier to talk to them from a graduate point of view: I used to go to the same career fair as a student just 2 years ago!
During the company presentation, I found it interesting that a lot of guys asked about how quickly you can put into practice what you’ve studied for years, to gain more and more responsibility: what a better occasion to describe our corporate values and underline how well they represent RB?
At RB you are given real responsibility from day one and encouraged to be bold, fast acting and set the pace. Your career really is in your hands.

.

As already described in a post by one of my fellow bloggers Idoia, this is a great chance to get in touch with RB and speak to us first hand.
If you want to know more about events we are attending in European Universities, check our careers website.

We are looking for smart, entrepreneurial people, those who are team oriented and willing to take ownership for what they do.

The RB Graduate Program was mentioned twice last week on this blog – Eva talked about her international secondment and Verity revealed how British comedian Eddie Izzard would be a perfect RB graduate.

So I want to talk about one of the “entrance doors” into it: career fairs.

Almost all big companies looking for new and young talent have stands on university career fairs, so hurry up! Opportunities are there and if you really want to take one, you’ll need to work on it.
It’s not enough to just turn up and leave your CV with someone. If you want to stand out from the crowd you need to be proactive.

Making yourself visible amongst others is not an easy task in a career fair, but there are things you can do to ensure you are properly prepared.
Have a look at this video about career fairs:

Do your research: Know exactly what the companies do and the roles they offer (for example, Reckitt Benckiser’s jobs website).

Talk: Spend time talking to company representatives instead of just leaving your CV (they might just remember you!). You have nothing to lose and it can really make the difference.

In the video you can also see some things you shouldn’t do, like worrying too much about companies’ free gifts, which from my personal experience of career fairs, can be a bit annoying.

If you want to investigate further, read this short piece focusing on “5 job fair mistakes recent graduates make” – which offers some really interesting tips.
And if you think you are ready for the challenge of a careers fair, you can find out which fairs RB will be attending all over the world on the graduate events page of our jobs website.

As you may have seen, RB Spain will be at ESADE Business School career fair on February 10th with the objective of finding candidates for the Graduate program assessments.

See you there!
