Day 4 – Final meeting in Luanda

Today, we are going back home to Germany. At 6 a.m. in the morning, we leave by car to Luanda, which is eight hours away. We arrive safely in Luanda and can have a last meeting with the employees of Save the Children in Luanda and say goodbye to everybody.

We are about to board the plane with lots of impressions from the projects – we would like to say a big thank you Save the Children and Reckitt Benckiser!

Tag 4

Day 3 – 26.04 – Support to villages

Today we went to Chipipa. After the obligatory meetings with the officials, we met another Health Commitee in Dondo. We were quite shocked by the constitution of the children; their clothes were very dirty and they didn’t seem to be very healthy. The very engaged committee held a short drama on the importance of cleaning water. In the next village of Kalima, we were part of a celebration for the successful completion of a birth attendend training. We handed over the kits to the women, containing gloves, disinfectants and other medical items. The help from Germany really reaches the people here! The women go back to their villages and spread the learnings to many more people, helping to save many lifes!
Once again, we are amazed by the hospitality of the people we met. We were welcomed very warmly with dances and songs in every village!

26.04.2011

Then we are leaving for Chicala, where we meet with the only trained doctor for the region (over 700.00 people!) who shows us the hospital. The medical staff is very engaged to help the people with the limited resources they have. On the road to Luvili we experience the first real offroad-feeling, leaving the tarred main road onto a gravel road through the woods. Arriving in Luvili, the people give us a very warm welcome dancing and singing for us. Then the health committee informs us about their work.
In the next village, Essaque, a big group of children is already waiting to sing and dance for us. We join a sanitization training and leave for Huambo in a thunderstorm with heavy rain. This evening, we are going to meet a youth committee who work on awareness raising projects for HIV/AIDS.

Only our driver is a bit surprised to see our luggage; in the end, we sit with two people in the front of the car and four in the back. Very cosy! After a short stop in the offices of Save the Children we’re leaving for Huambo. We travel in rain and thunderstorm through beautiful landscape on a road with lots of holes and bumps and after 9 hours drive we finally arrive in our hotel. We are already very excited to visit the first projects tomorrow!

Have you ever really wanted to make a difference, to do something that matters, to do something BIG?

German students have a fantastic opportunity to do just that, by taking part in an amazing competition which challenges entrants to create a simple yet innovative idea to save children’s lives in Angola, one of the poorest places in the world.

Â

The competition is being run by RB Germany together with Save the Children. Student groups are invited to plan the whole project and manage it like a real business case.
It needs to be realistic and efficient. Entrants also need to show strong problem-solving skills, sharp analytical skills and persuasiveness.
Projects will be rated by KPIs (key performance indicators) such as how well the project fits the region, how well social networks are used to raise awareness, how efficient the money would be used and, of course , the quality of the idea.

And the winners will be given the opportunity to visit Angola and see first hand the projects that Reckitt Benckiser is implementing there.
The winners’Â idea will also be documented throughout as a case study for corporate social responsibility e.g. for universities.
This scheme follows a tradition of collaborations between RB and Save the Children in finding great projects that impact and really make a difference to the children who need help the most.
The closing date for entries is the end of March 2010 and they will be judged by experts at Save the Children and Reckitt Benckiser colleagues.

Â

If you want to join in, you can find all the information on the Do Something Big website. The site is German only however, as the project addresses German students.
Plus you can even help just be subscribing to the newsletter – Reckitt Benckiser has pledged to add 1 Euro to the project budget for each e-mail address subscribed to the newsletter.

Â
So don’t wait – DO SOMETHING BIG!
