From October 5-9 I was in South Africa for the 2009 IS Developing Markets Conference.

Developing Markets is one of the three geographical regions where Reckitt Benckiser operates (the other two are Europe and North America and Australia) and it encompasses all countries outside Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand where RB is present.
As you can imagine this is the region with the biggest mix of cultures, languages and nationalities.

The theme of the conference was “Starscope: Future Ready”.

The idea behind it was to bring together some of the best talents from Information Services (IS) across Developing Markets to work together during one week and come up with ideas to support the future of IS with Reckitt Benckiser and to understand what we need to do NOW to ensure that we can deliver sustainable and above-industry average growth in the coming years.

During the first 4 days of the conference I had the chance to work with great people
from all over the world; most of them were managers and senior managers. It was an amazing learning experience and all the work we were doing was being supervised by the IS Developing Markets BIG FIVE: The four IS Regional Directors and the IS Developing Markets Director.

In the last day we had to present all the work we did and our ideas and suggestions to the BIG FIVE and also to our CIO (Chief Information Officer)!
It’s really amazing the opportunities you have as an IS graduate at Reckitt Benckiser. I wonder where else in the world I would have had a chance to be there in front of a CIO presenting what me and my colleagues believed to be the best strategy for our future!

Besides working really hard during the whole week we had some breaks to recharge our batteries and to be ready for the next day.
During one of these breaks we went in a game drive and had the opportunity to see the African Big Five.

The chance to work with bright people, in front of your big bosses and you also have a chance to visit an amazing place like South Africa.
These are the opportunities you have when you work for Information Services in Reckitt Benckiser!

So, where has he been recently, you’re probably asking yourself, this guy with
the backpack on the photo on the front page of the Reckitt Benckiser blog?

Well, I put my headlight on and some provisions in my backpack, joined a French rope team and descended into the deep vaults of Reckitt Benckiser information systems (IS)!
That’s where.

And I assure you, we met a lot of our international colleagues from finance down there with a common objective: a major upgrade of our management reporting tools!
Luckily we had also teamed up with our colleagues from IS, so we had sound technical support for this mission. However, I guess we would have hardly survived if we were not used to working in depth with our financial systems on a daily basis – I reckon that a certain affinity to financial systems is among the crucial prerequisites for a successful finance career in Reckitt Benckiser.

After getting used to the handling of the new reporting system, we had to thoroughly analyse the new application’s behaviour and evaluate the data from a business point of view.
Of course we had to always compare the figures to our current reporting systems to ensure full data integrity.
We had identified quite a few issues that had to be solved to get the project completed in time. As almost everything is fixed now, we are currently preparing training sessions to instruct the local end users.
By the end of the year, we will then be ready to do the final roll out!

After all, during this project, we not only implemented now a solution with significantly enhanced reporting and analysis capabilities, but also made some very interesting cross-functional contacts within the company.

As you can see, we work closely together with our colleagues from IS. So no surprise that I’d now like to hand you over to Vinicius, an IS graduate based in the UK.
He has been with the company since 2007 when he started in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is perfectly placed to tell you about his global career and the dynamic two years he has had with RB.

I’ve really enjoyed my time writing on this blog, sharing my plancake recipe, along with my experiences and stories of what life is like at Reckitt Benckiser.
And having read so far, you will probably agree that this blog is a very good opportunity to discover what life at RB is really like!
So looking forward to seeing you soon at RB …
