Ultimate Visibility

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

If you think about sucessfully building your career then visibility is one of the most important things. If one’s performance is visible to higher management levels then chances for the next step on your job ladder are high.

One of the best things about RB is that RB employees get ultimate visibility. When I was management trainee, the GM of RB Pakistan and directors of various functions knew not only my name but also they knew what projects I was working on.

The reason is that RB is a lean organization with an almost flat hierarchy. Employees are directly involved in the decision making process, rather than closely supervised by many layers of management. This eliminates bureaucracy in an organization and empowers people.

The top management is closer to the middle management which makes it easier for the upper management to communicate effectively to the lower level management. Flat hierarchy organizations like RB in comparison to tall structures are more effective in terms of innovation and empowerment. That is why RB won The Economist’s Innovation Award in the category of Corporate use of Innovation.

Organizational Structures

Our view is not limited to our country only, we get visibility on a global level. As management trainees we had training sessions with our regional HR director, SVP Global Corporate Communication & Affairs and our Regional Director. These kinds of sessions teach us to think global and act local; top management shares their views regarding RB global. We get to know the future plans, share best practise and have business updates with other regions.

With great empowerment and visibility comes great responsibility, everyone in RB knows every other person’s performance so one has to put his/her best forward. RB no doubt is a place for people who are achievers and performers.

Conceptual sign of sucess in business and life

Do you want to work in an environment where you have visibility to top management already in an early stage in your career? Do you want responsibility and are an achiever and high performer? Than RB might be the right place for you – find out more in the ‘Are we right for you?’ section on our website: www.reckittbenckiser.jobs

It’s tough, really tough – but boy do I enjoy working here!

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Hi everyone.
This is a good title for a post, isn’t it? Today I’ll talk to you what it’s really like working at RB and all the responsibilities that are involved in the process.
Because, let’s be honest: RB is not a place for everyone.

It is not enough to want to work here – you must really, really want it, because it is not an easy task.
You’ll work with high performers and you’ll be challenged to always outperform yourself.

 New Reckitt Benckiser logo

Responsibility. This is a word that we use and listen a lot here at RB and we are evaluated by it. Working at RB means you will be given real responsibility from day one and will be in there with the ‘big boys’.
It’s fast it’s furious and you are expected to aim high and outperform.
Here we launch a lot of products within a year, we are challenged to show a fast “speed to market” – to sell your product in every point of sales.
Reckitt is a company that strives to succeed in whatever it does: new products, working with people, growing globally as a company and helping the environment.

RB is an extremely dynamic place, and people that work here should be too! Your values have to match with the companies´ values.

Achievement: We don’t just aim high, we always aim to outperform
Entrepreneurship: We allow daring ideas to thrive
Spirit: We work as one, united by common principles and attitudes
Ownership: We take the initiative to do what’s needed

This is what working at RB is like. And here are the tips I have taught myself on how to handle such a dynamic career:

  1. Learn to focus. To really focus on my job and what I wanted to achieve.
  2. I give myself a pep talk at the start of every day. You’ll have to be an up to date person: interested in new facts, new products, new ideas. You have to be a global person
  3. Responsibility. As I talked in the beginning of this post, this is the word that will be always present.
RB is committed to environmental issues. In a recent Linked In question, we asked how important corporate social responsibility is to graduates and anyone starting out in their career.
And, as witnessed by the responses, this combined with other aspects, is a point of attraction for new talent. They want to work in a “responsible” company (again that word).

Graduate student Elizabeth Ghormley (NYU) said: “Not only does it differentiate companies by a shining light on culture and corporate values, if posed with job offers from a company with no CSR practice and one with CSR success, I would choose the latter every time”.
And David Connor who writes a CSR-based blog at DavidCoethica added: “With Generation Y’ers hitting the job market CSR can add serious value to any recruitment requirements as long as those within HR really understand the agenda, ideally as part of an embedded ethos across the company.
“Graduates, even though they understand their choices maybe somewhat limited at the moment are still testing potential employers on CSR issues that are particularly relevant to them.”

So, yes, RB has a fantastic record of taking its corporate responsibility seriously because this is a company focused on outperforming in EVERYTHING it does.
For the past 10 years RB has implemented an ambitious plan for CSR which has really delivered results – and set the pace for the whole industry.
RB believes that sustainability and corporate responsibility are good for business and essential for the world. And where we outperform it’s because our sustainability strategy complement our business strategy.
This is why I believe RB is such a great place to work.
So, my advice to you is to think a lot and research research research before choosing a company to work for.
And I leave you with this message: working at RB is tough, really tough, and they make great demands on you – but I REALLY enjoy what I do!

As always, if you have any question, doubts, comments, please, leave me a comment. I’ll answer asap.

RB digs in with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to maintain a nature reserve

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

As you may have read in my Tweets recently, October 23 was the New Technologies Group away day.
We visited a nature reserve and spent the day helping the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the North Carr Conservation Group with maintenance of the reserve.

It was a day of extremely tough manual labour – its hard to dig up the roots of invasive pond plants when your movement is restricted by being waist deep in mud – but it felt good to have achieved something worthwhile.
It will be good to return to the site next summer to see how the rare, indigenous wildlife has flourished as a result of our work.

Here is a newsletter we have received from The NCCG about the day.

A quacker of a launch for OHOP!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

The Australian RB offices have been hit with an influx of bizarre activity - cryptic concrete chalking, mirror messages and, more bizarrely, thousands of rubber duckies appearing everywhere!

1

As part of the internal OHOP (Our Home Our Planet) committee we were challenged to develop an internal employee teaser and education campaign to coincide with an exciting event.

And before you ask what’s with all the ducks check out the great media event held in Sydney CBD.

Above is a photo from the Our Home Our Planet Media launch  featuring Aaron Wood (2001 Young Australian of the Year, National Environment Winner), our celebrity spokesperson.

These 5600 ducks represent 5 million litres of water that could be saved annually if every Australian household currently hand-washing converted to using a dishwasher. By 2026 it would be the equivalent of the water in Sydney Harbour. Other helpful water and energy saving  tips can be found at  www.ourhome-ourplanet.com.au

The internal teaser campaign culminated with the inaugural RB OHOP Olympics held at RB Aus offices where employees were invited to win great prizes by participating in ‘green themed’ events such as:

  • RB ½m Duck Dive
  • RB dishwasher packing challenge
  • Airwick Eguesstrian Challenge

Overall the launch was a great success and we are looking forward to bigger and better next year!

Committed to making a big impact

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Reckitt Benckiser is known to most as the leader in the household cleaning segment which has several mega brands to its credit.
It is also known as a company which has been committed to providing superior products to consumers.

However, few know of the company’s commitment to child welfare.

RB has been associated with Save the Children (STC) since 2003 and has continually been organizing fund raising events to support their programs across the globe.
In June this year, RB undertook its second Global Challenge to raise funds for educational programs being run in J&K by Save the Children.
As a part of the Challenge, employees from across the global offices of RB participated in a trek in the Ladakh region. They also stayed on to spend time with children covered under the program in J&K.

And the £260,000 plus raised will help make a difference to the lives of thousands of children. £108,000 of the total raised will go towards helping 24,000 children across 400 villages in the state alone.

RB had earlier partnered with STC to support a program for Child Domestic Workers in West Bengal. In total £90,000 was contributed towards the program which helped change the lives of 780 children trapped in unskilled domestic work in the state.

It is rare to find an organization which builds a culture of giving and promotes such noble causes.
But it is initiatives like this which make people proud to be part of an organization like RB – the company is committed to making a big impact in whatever it does.
It’s the right thing to do to help the societies we work in so when we do it, we want to do it well.

To find out more about RB’s involvement with Save the Children and social responsibility, and how we’re making a real impact on saving lives, visit the community section of our new corporate website.
