4 essential terms at RB – or how our entrepreneurial culture flies

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

1. Insights
Whether it’s identifying an unrevealed consumer belief or the way that shoppers behave, we are relentlessly on the lookout for insights to drive product development and communication.
As a mentor at RB once told me, you can tell it is a good consumer insight if you find yourself nodding by the end of the sentence.

2. Gross Margin
Throughout RB, teams are constantly innovating around ways to expand gross margin to inject back into brand building and top line growth.
Package Engineering, R&D, Materials Management, Purchasing, Quality and Marketing are scrutinizing every SKU (a warehouse term which stands for Stock Keeping Unit) in the portfolio for ways to cut costs without compromising product quality.
The best kind of squeeze is a value-in – where you can improve product performance in a more cost-effective way or simultaneously provide a more environmentally sustainable product.

3. Alignment
One of the important skills to be successful in brand management is the ability to set direction, align and lead projects.
Most of the projects we undertake could not be successful without the full engagement of a project team. RB is not a ‘consensus culture’, which is why it is important to have cross-functional teams involved in initial project meetings.
An objection from trade in the first project meeting can result in a fruitful debate that can widen the scope of the project and lead to a bigger opportunity.

4. Existing Product Development
At any one time a brand can have dozens of EPDs in the pipeline.
Associate Brand Managers spend a lot of time making sure projects are moving quickly and achieving the objectives we set out to achieve. It is also a chance to work with our Supply Managers who act as intermediaries between the brand and the supply organization.
On these projects we have the opportunity to take risks and have an impact early on.

If you have a good insight, it has good gross margin (it makes business sense) and you align it with your team you are on your way to an EPD.
It’s the simple straightforward way of interpreting the entrepreneurial culture around project management that exists at RB.
We have the opportunity to uncover possibilities and lead projects as long as they are based on real consumer insights and make business sense.

Sometimes you will have to fight for your projects to be prioritized and you will need to identify and deal with potential blockages that come up.
If you don’t follow your project closely, there is a chance it can get de-railed or de-prioritized.

Working at RB is not for everyone – it’s fast paced, dynamic and calculated risk taking is encouraged. But for me it presents an opportunity to get real responsibility early and fight for the projects and initiatives I feel most passionately about.

Time to be appreciated

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Hi there!

As you probably know, market in Russia includes also Ukraine, Belorussia and CIS countries. CIS market is developing one but RB gained success.

So I have some news from CIS countries:

Last year Azerbaijan started from the new event: Brand Award Ceremony 2008.

This prize was awarded to most popular brands of goods, services, companies and organizations that triggered the highest interest and gained consumers’ popularity during the year. This prize marks success in creating a wide range of brands, from large-scale goods through to financial services and corporate image.

The result of 8 months of internet polling was the participating in the poll of nearly 5,000 respondents from 50 countries around the globe and 30% of pollers cast their votes outside Azerbaijan. So amongst 35 nominations the winners in 2 nominations were Nurofen and Calgon.

Such events can show us the result of our daily work, the common cooperation of all the departments: every person in the company is involved in this process and I know this is not our last, but our latest awards.
In Russia the Product of the Year 2008 was Vanish and Nurofen in Healthcare category. Looking forward to 2009 events!

Interpersonal Communication Skills for Career Success

Monday, July 6th, 2009

I recently attended a training on interpersonal communication skills whose objective is to increase your ability to influence and build strong work relationships. We addressed subjects such as managing tough conversations, managing stress and emotional intelligence, developing conflict resolution skills, using de-escalation techniques to calm and refocus for positive results.
One easily forgets that having strong interpersonal communication skills is what makes a difference in your work. We all have strong technical skills, however what matters is how well you present your work and convey your ideas. It is also about working as a team member, which means working with a team rather than working for a team. If you do everything alone and never partner with other people, you can create huge barriers to your own potential.
One of the most interesting subjects we addressed during this training was how to customize your approach according to the work style and values of the people you are communicating with to maximize results. Sometimes communication and listening become more difficult because we are trying to communicate with someone that may have a very different personality and work style than we do. But if you understand them, they will understand you better and therefore, you will have more influence.
In this context, we all took a test to figure out what our work style was. It appears that I am what they call a “blue person” or a “Sensor”: I am action-oriented, hard working and can handle a lot of work. I have a high energy level coupled with a high need to achieve. Therefore, the best way to communicate with me is to focus on action, bottom-line, demonstrate competence and be prompt in response.
On the other hand, if I want to communicate effectively with what they call a “green person” or a “Thinker”, someone into the details, who likes structure, order and facts, I would need to be factual, objective, precise and exact. It would also be better to organize my presentation using a systematic progression and scientific method.
This gives you an idea of the tools we learned to be more effective at communicating at work. I have already started to use some of them in my daily work and I can tell you it is making my life easier!
I also recently gave an interview for Career Rocketeer which is a new online site aiming to ‘fuel’ your career and help it take off. I give some more insight about working at Reckitt Benckiser. I know it’s a tough call when you’re out there looking for a career to pursue but there is a wealth of information online that you can tap into to ensure the company you do opt for is right for you. Check it out: Career Rocketeer’s Profession Confession. You can also try out the Reckitt Benckiser Virtual Career game, which is a bit of fun and shows you how you could progress within the company Reckitt Benckiser Virtual Careers game. Enjoy!

Brand Planning not Bland Planning

Brand Plan in 45 words or less –

we anticipated, we worried, we encouraged, we argued, we agreed, we compromised, we challenged, we aspired, we ate far too much pizza, we added words, we ate far too much chocolate, we took out words, we puzzled, we solved, we created, we presented, we proved.

So that was maybe 46 words…

The Power of One

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Here I am this week in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the annual Sales and Marketing meeting! Every year both US teams get together for a few days in a nice and relaxing environment that generates new ideas and team building.

This meeting is about bringing together the Sales and Marketing teams to discuss new brand initiatives, strategy and execution for the upcoming year. It is also about reminding people of how important it is to work together to achieve common objectives. The Power of One!

The Power of One is a concept that was created about a year ago in the US business. What does it mean? It is about the power to be more productive, to explore new ideas, to create a new working environment, to succeed, all together. Over the past year, some changes took place to enable each team to develop this mindset. For instance, some teams have been co-located with the objective of optimizing efficiencies and strengthening the team spirit. The next big step will be the creation of a new workplace, designed as an open space, to drive enhanced collaboration between teams and speed of decision making as part of our everyday business life.
It will be up to all of us to turn the power on…
