Working in marketing totally rocks – despite the roaches!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Hi everyone.

As Marcus has already told you, I´m the new Brazilian blogger here on My RB Opportunity!

I am a trainee too and he helped me a lot during the 6 months I’ve worked in Indirect Channel (for those who don´t know what Indirect Channel is: This is a Sales Channel, that negotiate with distributors and wholesales).
So thanks Marcus for all your advices and learnings.

I am really anxious to start blogging. This is an important space to exchange experiences and to learn about other countries reality. It stimulates people to know more about RB and how we work here.

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a new challenge: going back to marketing to be part of the Pest Control team (this mean that I have to know everything about flies, roaches, ants and even dengue mosquito!).
I was extremely happy and excited with this new position. I had already worked in marketing during the trainee program (with Finish and Vanish), and now I had the possibility to go back to the area and focus my career on it.

We work with two different brands of insecticides: our global brand Mortein (sold all around the world), and SBP, our local hero (SBP is a Brazilian brand, bought by RB in 2003).
These two brands have different positioning: Mortein communicates power, efficiency. SBP sells protection for you and your family, as it is the only aerosol line with a water-based formula in the Brazilian market.

Our 2010 season (from August 2009 to March 2010), when this kind of product is mostly sold (it´s our summer time), is beginning in August, and we have developed a strong strategy to gain SOM (share of marketing) and distribution.

I still can’t tell you what we’ve planned – we have some secret launches!
But … I can anticipate that we´re launching Mortein Powergard here in Brazil! The new Mortein brand platform was named in RB’s big results announcement as a key company strategy to continue to outperform the markets with consistent innovation.
If you want to know more about it, you can read the full report on the Reckitt Benckiser home page or read the story of our success at The Times and the Wall Street Journal.

With Mortein Powerguard, together with all the new launches, I can guarantee that we’ll rock this season!

See you next week! And wait for more news from here!

game-screen-grab

Three weeks ago my boss said to me: “Would you like to become a Shop Account in the South of Italy?”
At the beginning I was amazed because I realized one thing: I’ve been in RB for a short period of time and the company just offers me a new, interesting and challenging job!

This is what happens in RB if you have a commitment and are an achievement-oriented person.
It is the ideal place of work if you are curious and if you have focus on the company values and targets, but above all if you want to improve your skills!

But what exactly does Shop Account mean and what does the position consist of?
I have a customer portfolio that I manage in autonomy, but in conformity with the company strategy. Everyday I visit a different customer and I analyze with them the problems at the point of sale.
Above all I try to find solutions to the issues present.
I check the presence of our products in the point of sales, the best visibility of them, and the right price and promotions during the year.
I’m a part of a team called “Shop team” and it is very united!

Previously I lived in Milan but now I live near Naples. As for the future – I don’t know…
I do know one thing: if you want to work in a well recognized company, while enjoying yourself and learning many things, RB is for you!

And there is a fun way to find out whether you are an RB type of person.
Click on the picture above and it will take you to our Virtual Career game where you are asked a series of questions and have to make the right choices to progress through the company.

This post is also a goodbye for me as my time as a blogger at this site has come to an end.
But I will be passing over to my colleague Gemma who will continue to tell you about working life at RB in Italy.
She is a marketing trainee and is an assistant brand manager for Finish.

Good luck in your career.

Graduate Assessment Centre

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Five years after going through the RB Graduate Assessment centre myself I participated as one of the Assessors yesterday. It felt odd being on the other end of the process but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it gives me great satisfaction to know I’ve inputted into this year’s intake.

We deliberated hard on a couple of the candidates (in this photo) but we found what we were looking for.

I have to say it really is a gruelling process for the candidates to get onto the RB grad scheme. Before this final RB assessment centre they all had to go through a telephone interview and previous assessment centre with our recruitment agency, and this day was very stretching.

From 9am to 5pm the day was back to back with a mixture of assessments, both group and individual exercises and interviews. Each exercise is designed to test a specific RB competency and the day is scheduled to allow all the assessors to see all the candidates to ensure a fair decision is made.

It’s critical that we get the highest possible calibre of graduates into the business as we are looking for our future senior leaders so expect to be really pushed!
If youre coming to an RB assessment centre my tips would be:

-Relax, it’s your time to shine and we want you to succeed, so don’t let nerves get the better of you.

-It’s a cliché but be yourself and act naturally. Its very obvious when candidates try to second guess what we are looking for and then ‘perform’ to deliver, and it always goes against them

-The harder you find it the better youre doing as we will keep challenging you to see how you perform under pressure. Take it as a compliment and thrive under the challenge. You shouldn’t find the day easy!

-Take each exercise as it comes and again, try not to second guess the competency being tested. Some candidates yesterday second guessed and then underperformed. It was a shame as had they not had this in the back of their mind they would have excelled

-You’ve worked hard and achieved a lot to get to this stage, enjoy it!

Getting to Market in Record Time

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I was on the edge of my seat for two weeks awaiting the verdict of whether our proposal was accepted by the Board…and it wasn’t. I only had a few minutes to feel disappointed and then in true RB style now working at lightning pace to deliver a new initiative (to meet the winter cold & flu sales peak) in a few weeks that would normally take a year to develop.

What’s great and different about RB is that although we have internal processes, if it means we have to get round them to be first to market, we’ll find a way. Working in Marketing means youre championing all the brand projects so you have to be the one to find shortcuts and convince people to go out of their way to make your priority their priority. So this week this week will be especially challenging and I need to tap into all the people skills I have!

On another note, its been 5 years since I went through the Graduate Scheme Assessment Centre myself and this Thursday Im going to be assessing my first one. Finding outstanding graduates is key to the future success of RB so Im really excited to be contributing to finding our future leaders. Looking forward to meeting the candidates and hopefully welcoming them to the team in Sept!
